About Schoolwegwijzer
Schoolwegwijzer is a free website where children in groep 6, 7 and 8 (the last three years of Dutch primary school, ages about 9 to 12) can practise for their tests, and where parents get plain-language explanations of the Dutch school system. No account, no adverts.
Why Schoolwegwijzer?
Groep 8 is an important year. Your child gets the voorlopig schooladvies (the school's provisional recommendation for secondary school level), takes the doorstroomtoets (the national test in groep 8) and then gets the definitief schooladvies (the school's final recommendation). Many parents want to help, but they are not sure how the system works or how to practise at home. This is especially true if they did not go to school in the Netherlands themselves. Good practice books and tutoring cost money. Schoolwegwijzer is free, so every child can practise.
That is why we have explanations for parents in Dutch, and short start pages in English, Turkish, Arabic, Polish and Ukrainian.
What you will find here
- Practice for the doorstroomtoets, the IEP test (one of the versions of the doorstroomtoets), the NIO (an intelligence test some schools use for the schooladvies), the Drempelonderzoek (a test of school skills some schools use for the schooladvies) and the mid-year and end-of-year tests in groep 6, groep 7 and groep 8.
- Explanations for parents in our knowledge base: from what is the doorstroomtoets? to the schooladvies and the referentieniveaus (the national standards for reading, language and maths).
- Free worksheets to print, with answers and explanations.
How do we make the practice questions?
The practice questions are our own material. The computer creates them again and again, with different numbers, words and texts. This means your child will never run out of questions. Every question comes with a step-by-step explanation.
The questions follow the referentieniveaus (1F, 2F and 1S) that apply to all schools in the Netherlands, and the types of question that appear in the tests. They are not real test questions: those are kept secret. Automatic checks make sure the answers and explanations are correct. Have you still spotted a mistake? Please email us and we will correct it.
Where do the explanations come from?
We base our explanations of tests, dates and rules on official sources: the Rijksoverheid (the Dutch central government), the test makers (such as Cito, Bureau ICE, Boom and 678 Onderwijs Advisering), the College voor Toetsen en Examens (CvTE, the Dutch board for tests and exams) and letters from the minister to the Tweede Kamer (the Dutch House of Representatives). Below each article you will find the sources and the date it was last updated.
Schoolwegwijzer is not connected to Cito, Bureau ICE, Boom, A-VISION, Diataal or any other test makers. We do not give an official schooladvies: that comes from the school.
