The problem

Many parents want to help, but miss an explanation of the Dutch system.

Reports, tests, groep 1–8, the school advice and parent meetings are not always self-explanatory, especially when Dutch is not your first language.

?

School language is complicated

What exactly does a test, level, report or advice mean? Parents often get information, but not always the context.

✎

Practising at home is hard

Parents don't always know which level fits or which exercises really help with maths, language or reading comprehension.

🌍

A language barrier gets in the way

Parents want to be involved, but feedback only in Dutch makes it hard to help in a targeted way at home.

The solution

A guide for parents and clear practice cards for children.

Schoolwegwijzer combines practical explanations about school for parents with free exercises and an explanation for every answer for children.

1

Your child picks a practice card

No long menus: choose a clear card for maths, reading comprehension or language and do a short session.

2

Instant explanation

After every answer your child sees why something is right, so practising is more than just a score.

3

What does the doorstroomtoets measure?

The doorstroomtoets in groep 8 mainly shows which reference level your child has reached in language and maths. Practising at home doesn't have to be big: read short texts together, talk about difficult words and calmly practise a few maths steps. Source: Rijksoverheid.

↑

Test result higher than the provisional advice?

If the doorstroomtoets gives a higher advice than the provisional school advice, the primary school will in principle raise its advice. If the school doesn't think that fits, it has to explain why. So feel free to ask for that explanation; Schoolwegwijzer itself does not give official advice. Source: Rijksoverheid.

The school advice can be single or double

The advice in groep 8 can be for one type of secondary school, such as havo, or for two neighbouring types, such as havo/vwo. A secondary school may not ask the primary school to give only a single advice. Source: Rijksoverheid.

School advice timeline 2027

In groep 8 your child gets the provisional advice between 10 and 31 January. The doorstroomtoets runs from 25 January to 12 February; the final advice follows by 24 March at the latest, and 25–31 March is the central registration week for secondary schools. Source: Rijksoverheid.

New in the Netherlands? Ask about the right class

Children who don't speak enough Dutch yet can sometimes get extra support at a regular school. Sometimes a newcomers' school, language school or international transition class is a better first step. Ask the school or municipality which route suits your child. Source: Rijksoverheid.

Multilingual at home? Use your strongest language too

Talk about books, the news or school words in the language you can explain best. A rich language environment, including the home language, helps multilingual children develop their language and reading skills. Source: Stichting Lezen.

Practising reading? Use the library

Let your child choose a book, comic or audiobook about something they enjoy. Children under 18 can become members of the public library (Bibliotheek) for free, so you can keep swapping books without buying them. Source: Bibliotheek.nl.

Important

Schoolwegwijzer is educational support. It gives explanations and practice direction, but no official school advice. For official decisions, the school, the parents and the child together remain leading.
