What happens at each step?

January: the voorlopig schooladvies

The basisschool gives the voorlopig schooladvies between 10 and 31 January. To do this, the school looks at several years: tests from the leerlingvolgsysteem (the school's pupil tracking system), work in class, attitude to work, and conversations with you and your child. Prepare well for that meeting with our checklist.

Late January, early February: the doorstroomtoets

Your child takes the test over one or two half-days. If the test is digital, the school chooses the days between 25 January and 12 February. The paper test is on 26 and 27 January for all schools. This year, that is in the first week of the period; in previous years it was the second week.

Mid-March: the toetsadvies

The school receives the results by 15 March at the latest. If the toetsadvies is higher than the voorlopig schooladvies, the school must reconsider its recommendation. The recommendation is never lowered. Read more: the doorstroomtoets results explained.

Late March: definitief schooladvies and registering

You will receive the definitief schooladvies by 24 March at the latest. With it, you register your child during the central registration week from 25 to 31 March. In some regions you may register earlier, but only with a definitief schooladvies. Registrations before 1 April count as registrations on 31 March. The secondary school decides by 12 May at the latest. If that is not possible, it must decide by 9 June at the latest.

Tip

Secondary schools hold most of their open days in January and February, right around the time of the test. Put them in your diary now.
